Product description
Berlin, 1942. When ten-year-old Bruno gets home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed into crates. His father has received a promotion, and the family must move to a new house far away, where there is no-one to play with and nothing to do. When they arrive at their new home, Bruno is baffled by its isolation, and by the razor-wire fence which stretches around it as far as the eye can see. Surely there must be more to this desolate place than meets the eye? And who is the boy across the fence, wearing striped pyjamas? Now a major film, this is an unforgettable Holocaust tale of innocence, evil, and a friendship that crosses all boundaries.

on 10 October 2014This is quite a sad story but still an amazing one. There is a very unexpected and shocking ending and it captures what life was like in world war 2 for an eight year old boy with a German commander for a Dad. I would recommend it for older children and prepare to get very upset!(although it is worth it as it is a unique and heart stopping, emotional story. John Boyne is an amazing author!!!

on 6 March 2014:( This book has made me think about the horrors… I’m glad we live in a world where when we have problems they are only little things unlike in the past where the problems were much for serious.
A super book Touching and Emotional. It’ll make you think hard about how lucky we are to live in a world that has little conflict in comparison to then.
Please read it and spread the word of how lucky we are…

on 4 March 2014This book will have you in tears. Although it starts of slow, you soon get wrapped up in the story and feel as if you are there. It’s amazing to see the different points of view. The characters and imagery are so believable that it is almost impossible to forget that it is only a book. Definitely 5/5!

on 9 March 2013touching and moving story, more for older readers. use insight to discover more about the war and people. my favrouite charecter was either shmuel (the jewish freind of brunos on the other side of the fence) or bruno himself as they are the best of freinds. its got a good moral of don’t mess with things that don’t concern you.

on 11 January 2013I honestly loved this book and it would definitely be my all time favourite book!! This book is not for the feint hearted and certainly for older ones. It’s sooo sad and will leave you constantly gripping at the edge of your seat, every page. The ending is very sudden and shocking but the whole book is without doubt a book to read!!! Would recommend it to anyone xx

on 30 June 2012A powerful book. It captivates your heart. The innocence of Bruno is just so- I can’t think of the word. It’s an extremely sad story and what really makes you think is that this was so possible and had happened. It’s very very sad. I wouldn’t recommend it for children under 12. We read the book in school and then we watched the film when we had finally finished the book – but I wish we hadn’t. The film is worse. For the last ten minutes, when everything suddenly ends, there was an uncomfortable silence in our classroom. We were all horrified – this had happened to so many people. It really makes you think. If you get emotional easily, I do not recommend this book – and definitely not the film. But, in spite of all that, it was a very well-written story that really makes you understand.

on 30 March 2012Oh my goodness, this is such a dreadfully sad book! The innocence of the boy and the way he feels just penetrates your heart. It also made me ache inside… I did not love it: that is not the right word. It is too sad for that word. But I would give it 5 stars just because of the wonderous storyline. Please don’t try this book if you hate sad novels…I sat in a chair and cried! By Matilda

on 22 August 2011this book is so sad but yet it’s a book you’ll never forget. As you read the book you will grow to love Bruno as a character because of his innocence. Shumuel and Bruno’s friendship will take you on journey you have never been on before in your whole life. Bruno and Shumuel are best friends for life. They would never leave each other, not through anything.
This book is amazing. Everyone should read this book but have a box of tissues beside you, you’ll need them.

on 4 February 2011This is got to be one of my all time favourites. As with its thrilling yet moving dilemas and events. With its destription and endless amounts of detail it is bound to go on your favourite list, although at times it is outragously sad of to how some people were been treated at the time. I guarantee you that by the end of reading this book you would of been forced a tear with the undescrible events taken place in the story. Not only is it a great deal of knowledge, but endless amounts of lessons are hidden behind this fascinating story. A real pleasure to read. Enjoy!

on 16 January 2011A dramatically amazing book, I loved the historical meaning to it and it had a beautiful sad twist at the end. It really opens your eyes to how prisoners must have been feeling, and how children had no idea what was going on throughout the war. It shows how the children were corrupted to believe what their parents thought, and that there was no real difference between a Jewish child or a German child. A very lovely read.
