Starting Year 1

Some children cope easily with new experiences and settle into a school setting quickly. Other children will find it hard to settle, or might have special circumstances that make it tricky for them to relax and be happy in your classroom. On this page, you will find tips and advice for helping all kinds of new pupils as they begin their time at your classroom.

The power of routine

Anyone who works with children will know the value of structures and routines. Year 1 teachers can help meet the needs of their new children by not making things too different too quickly. Instead, introduce change gradually, with at least the first half term sharing elements of practice similar to Reception.

  • Mirroring elements of planning from Reception’s summer term will help children to settle in.
  • Use circle-time activities to build children’s confidence to speak out.
  • From time to time, vary your routine or layout a little, to help the children learn to cope with change
  • Encourage your children to build their independence in everyday routines, such as getting dressed and toileting
