   A real page-turner

   This describes a scary world in the future where London has been obliterated by a terrorist attack. The story takes place in Cornwall where five teenagers discover a secret cavity in a ruined manor house which contains a mysterious box. Despite the dark setting, the book narrated by four of the five in turn is very entertaining. Each character is different, from blousy man-eating Jenna to uncouth Gary whose devotion to the strange creature he finds is both humorous and oddly touching. A real page turner.

   Fantastic book

   This is a FANTASTIC book. It’s set in a Cornish fishing village in the near-future, a few years after London has been destroyed and the government has restricted all non-essential travel and use of electricity, etc. But if you don’t like dystopian books, don’t let that put you off. It’s also about Cornish wreckers a hundred years ago, who unwittingly bought Pandora’s box ashore, and the lady of the manor who let out the last remaining demon. But if you don’t like myth parables, don’t let that put you off either. It’s really the story of five teenagers, who’ve been friends ever since they were at nursery school together, and everything that happens to them during the course of one year. It’s a story of friendship, of adventure and misadventure, of good and evil, and – even though the demon let out from the box is hopelessness – it is a story full of hope.
