Our October 2021 Ages 9-10 Book of the Month
For my 9+ October Book of the Month I have chosen the debut novel from superstar striker Ian Wright with Musa Okwonga, Striking Out. Like most thirteen-year-olds, Jerome Jackson dreams of becoming the best footballer in the world. But with a difficult home life, it feels like Jerome’s dream will never become a reality. Until one day he meets a mentor who sets him on the right track, and teaches him the best strikers aren’t the most skilful ones, they are the ones who never give up.
Written in conjunction with author, poet, journalist and musician Musa Okwonga, the book is inspired by the life of Ian Wright – and fans of his will love to know he even has a cameo in the book! Being one of the UK’s all-time leading goal scorers, having lifted the Premier League title, the FA Cup, the European Cup Winners’ Cup and won the Premier League golden boot, Wright has probably the one of the highest expertise in the country on what it takes to be a top striker! Children who are fans of football but may be reluctant readers will devour this book, as it’s filled with tips, tricks and insider knowledge.
