Product description

The night the Nazis come to take their mother away, three children escape in a terrifying scramble across the rooftops. Alone in the chaos of Warsaw, they must learn to survive on their own. Then they meet Jan – a ragged boy clutching a silver paperknife that they recognise as belonging to their long-lost father. The ‘silver sword’ becomes their symbol of hope as, with Jan, they begin a hazardous journey across war-torn Europe in search of their parents.

    A great adventure story

The Silver Sword is a fantastic story to introduce kids to the story of World War 2 refugee children. I read it aloud to my 7 year-old and we both learnt so much about the geography of the fictional Balicki family's journey from Poland to Switzerland through Germany as well the tensions of being a refugee. A story which focuses on hope, courage, loyalty and resilience and the common threads of decency and spite, good and evil, which run through all groups of people, regardless of their nationality.
