Product description

Michael’s baby sister is sick, maybe dying. As his parents spend their days at the hospital, his life seems suddenly lonely and uncertain. But one day he stumbles into the ramshackle garage of their new home and finds something magical: a strange creature, part owl, part angel. Is it good? Or maybe evil? What is Skellig’s miraculous secret? Can it help him to breathe life back into his sister and stick his broken world together again? Winner of the Carnegie Medal, this hypnotic modern classic shimmers with magic and wonder.

“Touched with a visionary intensity, this strange, hugely readable and life-affirming tale exercises every muscle of the imagination.” Guardian

“Truly original, mysterious and affecting … Almond treads with delicate certainty, and the result is something genuine and true.” Philip Pullman

    Skellig

After a year 6 child had written a review about this book ( she had read at home ) ,I wanted to read it straight away.
It was a gripping start , the plot was getting increasingly nail biting ,however once i reached page 32 ,there was a word to which i was really disappointed to read .
I decided to gloss over the word .
The story had me hooked the plot ,characters I needed to finish ......the word again appeared many times, repeated .
The book was amazing it drew me in ,but it really didn't need the word, would have been so much better choosing a different word
I did so want to let the children read this in year 5/6 and place in our library but I'm afraid I couldn't sit this book on our shelves with the word in .Gutted

Scholastic: We are sorry to hear you are disappointed with some of the language found in Skellig. We read every book we sell at Scholastic to determine the appropriate age range for our customers. For a title like Skellig which is a middle grade book with some slang or rude language, but no swear words, we would suggest it is appropriate for 11 to 12 year olds. We agree with you that is would not be appropriate for a Year 5 student, but for children at the top end of primary school and the first few years of secondary school.
